Expect the more that language is abstract and general (including numbers, labels, statistics, polls, charts, body counts), the less that people are able to "see" (to visualize, to comprehend) the specific individuals of the Other side. Joseph Stalin, the Soviet dictator responsible for millions of deaths, knew this; he said "A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic." In war, for example, it's easier to kill "things" than to kill human beings (mothers, fathers, children). Thus, abstract language dehumanizes. |
