David Bernstein Endowed Scholarship in English *Amount of Award: $1,000 Language--the shades and shapes of words, the choices made, the truths touched--was central to the life of David Bernstein. He grew up in the southern suburbs, was awarded the state English award when he graduated from high school, attended Yale University as a Yale National Scholar until illness forced his withdrawal, and was graduated from Roosevelt University with its Phelan Fellowship for graduate study. His literary interest focused on criticism and poetry; he was also a talented pianist and a Chicago Cubs fan. David died in 1972 at the age of 24; his parents endowed this scholarship in his honor. Applications are Accepted from May 15 through July 31
Selection The chair of the division which houses the English curriculum is to select the David Bernstein Endowed Scholar each year. The chair is to select students who, in addition to earning the 3.5 GPA, are making significant contributions to the program through outstanding classroom participation or by providing learning assistance to students or teaching assistance to faculty. The chair is to send to GSU's director of the Office of Financial Aid, in writing, the name and bio of the winner in time for the award to be announced by September1. *Amount may vary somewhat based on current earnings and addition, if any, to principal.
