David R. Barr Scholarship in K-12 Education

*Amount of Award: Tuition waiver for two trimesters

David Barr has been a member of the GSU Foundation since 1976, serving as president from 1994 to 1997 and in other executive capacities before and since then.An attorney with a practice in Matteson, he has been active in public school affairs since 1971, serving as a member and in a leadership role on the Boards of Education for both Matteson District 162 and Rich Township High School District 227.

This scholarship was established in his honor at the end of his term as president of the GSU Foundation.It is offered to students who are already teaching or are training to become teachers, especially those acquiring special skills to serve in schools with diverse student populations.

Eligibility (Documentation of requirements is to accompany application)

  1. Student must be enrolled for a minimum of six credit hours

  2. Must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of the area served by GSU

  3. Must have a GPA of 3.25 or better

  4. Financial need is a consideration, but not a restriction

  5. Preference is given to students preparing to teach in school districts with the greatest need.

Applications are Accepted from May 15 through July 31)

  1. The application form is to be submitted with a bio/essay (500-1000 words) detailing how the degree program will benefit the applicant's students and career.

  2. Letters of recommendation from the applicant's school district and/or GSU faculty/administration are encouraged.

  3. All application material is to be sent to GSU's Director of Financial Aid.

Selection The selection committee, on which Mr. Barr will serve, will review all applications.The chair will notify the Director of Financial Aid of the winner in time for the award to be announced by September 1.

*Amount may vary based on current earnings and any addition to principal.
