Dr. Judith A. Cooney Memorial Scholarship in Counseling

*Amount of Award: $1,000

Dr. Cooney was a professor of counseling and a scholar, respected, admired and loved by her colleagues and her students.When she died after a long illness, her division chair and fellow faculty members spearheaded an effort to establish a scholarship in her name; by giving generously themselves and holding several fundraising events, in less than a year they raised enough money to fully endow this award.The scholarship will be an enduring tribute to their fondness for Dr. Cooney and to the way she would want to be remembered ... helping others.

Eligibility (Documentation of requirements is to accompany application)

  1. Applicants must be students in good standing, with a minimum GPA of 3.3, enrolled in the counseling program for nine credit hours to receive the full scholarship, with a minimum of six hours.(The award will be prorated for students carrying fewer than nine hours and applied to the next term until fully expended).

  2. Must have candidacy or completing candidacy during the term of application.

  3. Financial need is a factor and must be documented.

Applications are accepted from May 15 through July 31

  1. Student must complete an application form and submit it with a letter of 500 to 1,000 words addressing: Commitment to working with people Overcoming life obstacles Reason for financial need Clarity of career goals

  2. Two letters of recommendation are required addressing the applicant's suitability for a career in counseling, including such qualities as compassion, humor, courage, humor, courage, ethical behavior, commitment, etc.

  3. Application, letter/essay and letters of recommendation are to be sent to Dr. Addison Woodward, chair, division of Psych and Counseling.

Selection

A selection committee composed of Pat Favuzzo, Pat Smith, Pat Tobias, Diane Long, and Addison Woodward (or their designates) will review all applications and choose the winner.Top contenders may be interviewed, at the discretion of the committee.The chair will send to the Director of Financial Aid, in writing, the name, SS number, address and a brief bio of the winner in time for the award to be announced by September 1.

*Amount may vary somewhat based on current earnings and addition, if any, to principal.
