Joyce E. Gordon Scholarship

*Amount of Award: $250

Joyce Gordon was employed in GSU's purchasing office from 1972 until her death in 1992, rising from her initial clerical role to her position as assistant director of purchases. Throughout that time she demonstrated her commitment to service to the university community; she cheerfully assisted countless GSUers through the complications of the purchasing process, served on the Ford Heights School District No. 169 Board of Education, as Ford Heights village clerk, and as a volunteer to a variety of organizations both in the university and in her community. At the same time she completed her Bachelor's degree and raised six children. Winners of this scholarship will be those whose paths of service follow that taken by Joyce Gordon.

Eligibility (Documentation of requirements is to accompany application)

  1. Student must be pursuing a Board of Governors degree (alternatively social work or public administration)

  2. Must have completed a BOG portfolio and a minimum of 12 hours of coursework at GSU, or 12 hours in CHP or CBPA

  3. Must be enrolled in a minimum of nine (9) credit hours for the fall term

  4. Must have a demonstrated record of community service and/or volunteer work

  5. Must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Illinois

  6. African-American preferred, but others not excluded.

Applications are accepted from May 15 through July 31

  1. Administrators of the BOG program may solicit students to apply, or students may submit letters of application to the Director of Financial Aid.

  2. Applications are to document eligibility and stress community service/ volunteerism.

Selection

The chief administrator of the BOG program will serve on the selection committee. GSU's Director of Financial Aid will name the winner by September 1.

*This scholarship is not endowed. Amount may be less or greater each year based on current earnings and addition, if any, to principal.
