Monsignor Ignatius D. McDermott Endowed Scholarship

*Amount of Award: up to $1,000 depending on hours enrolled Monsignor Ignatius McDermott, for decades a priest, staff member at Maryville Academy, leader at the Chicago Archdiocese's Catholic Charities, founding force of the Haymarket House, creator of both the Central States Institute of Addiction and Intervention Instruction Inc., has dedicated his life to helping others.

In keeping with his primary concern for substance abuse treatment, he oversees programs the restoration of good physical and mental health, health education, criminal justice, court related rehabilitative confinement and mandated services, gambling and domestic violence assessment and counseling.This scholarship is offered to students who seek to contribute to the field of addiction and recovery.

Eligibility (Documentation of requirements is to accompany application)

  1. Applicant must be enrolled or about to enroll for at least six units of credit

  2. Must be a citizen of the U.S. and a resident of Illinois

  3. Must be in good academic standing at GSU or a former college/university, with a 2.75 minimum GPA

  4. Preference will be given to students in Addiction Studies or Social Work, although any CHP student is eligible

  5. Applicant must show personal goal of serving the underserved, preferably with work or volunteer experience.

  6. Visit Haymarket Center and meet with Monsignor McDermott or designees.

Applications are accepted May 15 through July 31

  1. Applicants should send to GSU's Director of Financial Aid an essay of 500 to 1000 words containing a brief bio, describing their commitment to wanting to make a difference in society, and relating their experience/career aspirations in the field of addiction and recovery.

  2. Letters of support from faculty/administrators at GSU or lower division Institution or current/previous employer in the field are encouraged.

  3. Financial need is not a requirement for students who meet other criteria but will be considered if demonstrated.

Selection

A committee chaired by GSU Trustee Bobbie Peterson or her designee, with representatives from the Development Office, Financial Aid, and the College of Health Professions will screen applications and select the winner.The director of the Office of Financial Aid will announce the winner(s) by September 1.
