Virginia M. Pizza Endowed Scholarship in Geriatric Care

*Amount of Award: $1,250 each for two

Virginia Pizza, whose son Donald was president of the GSU Foundation from 1985 to 1990, established this scholarship to stimulate interest among GSU students for careers in geriatric care, to support students interested in this field, and to reward high academic performance.

Eligibility (Documentation of requirements is to accompany application)

  1. Student must be a resident of Illinois and a citizen of the United States

  2. Must be preparing for a career which involves geriatric care

  3. Graduate student must be enrolled for at least six credit hours; undergraduate for a minimum of nine hours

  4. Must be carrying a GPA of at least 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale).

Applications are accepted from May 15 through July 31

  1. The deans of the appropriate colleges will solicit nominations and applications from the divisions of nursing, speech pathology, OT/PT, social work, allied health, and psychology.

  2. Students may petition their deans or division chairs to document their eligibility as defined in these guidelines.

  3. Applications and nominations must testify to the character of the candidate, the candidate's commitment to working with the elderly (and experience, if applicable), and must describe the candidate's need for financial assistance.The students are to write a brief biographical essay documenting their interest in working with the elderly and how the scholarship will help them reach their career goals.

Selection

The deans will select qualified candidates whose applications/ nominations they will forward to GSU's Office of Financial Aid.The screening committee, chaired by Don Pizza, will select the winners and send their names and bios in writing to the director of Financial Aid in time for the awards to be announced bySeptember 1.

*Amount may vary somewhat based on current earnings and addition, if any, to principal.
