TV programs are lures designed to deliver an audience to advertisers. LATE NIGHT TALK SHOWS Late-night talk shows (such as those hosted by David Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien) usually have a mix of light pleasantries, current jokes, popular guests, and celebrities plugging new books or movies. Such brief, unrelated segments allow for many ads to be inserted between them. The opening monologue usually attracts the largest audience, many of whom will then go to bed unless they can be induced to stay up to see the Special Guest or celebrity - who will appear after a few more ads. These programs tend to have a home-based (house bound?)
audience of adults in their 30s or 40s, the younger "middle age."
Jokes --and ads -- are geared to such demographics.
