How to Analyze Election Rhetoric

" Politicians always say the same old things...."

Yes. Basic language patterns and a limited vocabulary exist within any sphere of life, whether sports or politics.

But, if we can anticipate these basic patterns and concepts, then we can recognize the many variations, degrees, and mixes.

One sentence, for example, summarizes the content of the basic claim of all campaign rhetoric:

"I am competent and trustworthy; from me, you'll get more good and less bad."

See the fuller explanation: "Images & Issues"

The party in power will say "Keep the 'Good' " | The party seeking power will say "Change the 'Bad' "

If you plan to live in a free, democratic society, you might as well look forward to, and enjoy, these important rituals. The more you know about the basic patterns of political language, the more interesting it will be for you to see the specific examples in various election campaigns, whether 50 years ago or 50 years hence.

The more you can anticipate the patterns of political language, the less likely you are to be deceived by anyone.
