involved in this course.
Assignments
The twelve assignments comprise the core learning experience
of this course. They have been moved to their own page to facilitate
access to the assignment list, which contains additional information
to assist you with each assignment.
The following topics are described in more detail below. You may
jump to any of these topics by simply clicking its title in the
following list:
********Instructor Bulletin Issued October 23, 2005********
The ACCESS link to the assignment Login page is not functioning. This link became disabled sometime Friday evening (October 21st) due to a power supply failure for the main server providing access to the course assignments. Consequently, you can not login and open assignments; nor can I continue to post graded assignments to your individual accounts. We will attempt to obtain a new power supply on Monday (October 24th). This may happen quickly or may take a few days. In the meantime continue to work offline as much as possible. I will make grading compensations for missed due date points.
This message will be removed as soon as the assignments server is back online. Thank you for your patience and please keep checking this page.

- Access Procedures
Click on:
which will take you to the login script for accessing the assignments.
I recommend that you bookmark the Login page or save it to your Favorites file.
Note: The first time you attempt to login choose the Are You a New User? option. Then complete a student profile and create your own ID and password which you will use each subsequent time you login.
- Completion Expectations
- Assignments may only be submitted once, and you are required to answer
all of the questions in each assignment. Any incomplete assignments (i.e.
even one question unanswered) will receive a grade of (0) points and may not
be resubmitted.
- Assignments should be submitted according to the schedule of Due Dates
(see the Course Operations page). This provides an excellent way for you
to stay on track which is critical to your success in the course. As a
guideline, you should plan on completing and submitting one assignment
per week.
- Additional points are added to your final grade (6.0 points maximum)
depending on the extent to which comply with the due date schedule.
- Caution: Any interruption in your Internet connection will result in the loss of answers you are currently entering into an assignment. Excessive idle-time (when you are logged into your Human Evolution account) is a major cause of connection interruptions. To prevent, or at least minimize the resulting loss of your answers, follow the procedures listed in the section below entitled: Working Offline.
- Working Offline
- It is strongly advised that you do not type answers directly into assignments. Direct typing produces excessive idle-time [see Section (2) above]. Instead, do your work offline and copy and paste your answers into each assignment. Regardless of whether your Internet connection is via 56K modem, high speed DSL, or cable, the longer your line is inactive (i.e. idle) in any given session, the more likely it is that you will get disconnected and loose your work. To avoid this problem, printout each assignment and answer the questions offline following the directions outlined below.
- Open a word file in Microsoft Word or similar product such
as Windows Notepad and type in your answers.
- Place all of the answers for a given assignment in a single
file; label the entire file according to the assignment answers
it contains.
- Be sure to clearly number each answer according to the
question it addresses. You need not retype the question.
- Caution: Be sure to save your word file
each time you close it.
- When you have completed all of the answers for a particular
assignment, open the word file and minimize it. Then login
and select the same assignment from the Human Evolution web site.
- Maximize the word file and highlight the first answer,
click on Edit and then select the Copy option.
- Minimize the word file and set the cursor in the upper
left corner in the answer space for the first question.
Then click Edit again and select the paste option. The answer
will appear in the answer space on the Internet.
- Caution: After copying and pasting
no more than three answers, simply click on the Go to Bottom link located under the lower left corner of each answer box and
then click the [Enter] button on the screen. This will save the your work.
- From the next screen, choose the Return to Assignments option, reopen the assignment, and continue entering your answers no more than three at a time..
- Assignment Submission
- Each time you access a given assignment, you will
see specific instructions on how to exit and save your
work and on how to submit the assignment for grading.
- You may access a given assignment as many times as
you wish before submitting it for grading.
- Once an assignment is submitted for grading, it may
not be revised and resubmitted again. In short, you
only "get one bite of the apple" with respect to each
assignment.
- You must submit your assignments only through the Biol 308 SA-SB
Internet web site as described above; separate e-mail or hard copy submissions of any kind are not an option.
- Evaluation and Grading
- Submitted assignments are eligible for grades of (0, 1,
or 2) points, with (2) being the maximum number of points
awarded for each assignment.
- The complete set of 12 assignments may therefore add up
to a total of 24 points (or 24%) of your final grade for
the course. The remaining 76% is derived from your performance
on the three proctored exams.
- Completeness is the first criterion in
determining your grade on an assignment. This means that all
of the assignment questions must be answered. If you are
unsure of the correct approach to a particular question,
say so, but then provide the best answer you are able to
formulate. Assignments submitted with one or more answers
missing will receive credit of (0) points.
- Quality is the second criterion used in
grading your assignments. The assignment questions are keyed
directly to one or two designated chapters in the text and/or
to assignment Instructor's Notes. You are required to research
these materials for the information needed to formulate your
answers. Your answers should, therefore contain direct, specific
and substantive information that is relevant to the topic of the
question. Any assignments submitted with vague generalized
answers will receive credit of (0) points.
- You will not lose points for mistakes. Points are deducted only
for noncompliance with either or both of the criteria identified
above.
- Assignment Return
- After an assignment is graded, the results will be posted to your account. When you login, the following notation will appear directly below the title of each graded assignment:
(Graded Assignment--Click Here for Evaluation Comments).
- Evaluated assignments will be posted with detailed corrective and
instructional comments. Use these comments to rectify any mistakes and to clarify and/or validate your conceptual grasp of the course material. These comments are strictly for your use, and you should not attempt to resubmit corrected assignments. Note: Assignments submitted after their respective due dates (see the Due Dates page) will be accepted and evaluated for credit (i.e. 0, 1, or 2 points). However, they may be posted without detailed instructional comments. This not a punitive policy; it is dictated by the constraints of time and fairness to students submitting working on schedule.
